Equality & Civil Rights
Despite our progress, there is still much work to be done to live up
to the idea that all Americans are created equal. We cannot allow anyone
to use race, gender, or sexual orientation to divide us and distract
us from our shared responsibility to ensure that the American dream
is accessible to every man, woman, and child.
In Congress, Commissioner Mike Quigley will work with
President Barack Obama to ensure the civil rights and equal treatment
of all Americans.
The Mike Quigley Equality Agenda
- Ending Employment & Pay Discrimination:
Mike Quigley will work to end discrimination based on gender, race,
and sexual orientation that is prevalent in companies' hiring and
payment practices. Mike will prioritize the passage of legislation
such as the Fair Pay Act and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
- Supporting a Woman's Right to Choose: Mike
Quigley is staunchly pro-choice and opposes any attempt to overturn
Roe v. Wade or limit access to this important aspect of women's health
care.
- Strengthening Hate Crime Legislation & Enforcement:
Mike Quigley recognizes that crimes motivated by hate must be prosecuted
to the fullest extent possible. Passing additional hate crime legislation
and putting an emphasis on enforcement will be top priorities for
Mike in congress.
The Mike Quigley Record of Accomplishment on Equality
- Full Civil Rights For Domestic Partners: Fulfilling
his promise to voters during his first election campaign, Mike Quigley
passed a groundbreaking ordinance that created the Cook Country Domestic
Partnership Registry. The registry-one of the few in the entire state
- allows domestic partners to more easily secure benefits for one
another.
- Benefits for County Employees: Mike passed
legislation granting full benefits to domestic partners of all county
employees.
- Ending Discrimination: Mike Quigley has supported
efforts to make income-based discrimination unlawful in Cook County,
ensuring residents can find safe, affordable housing near their workplaces,
schools, and accessible public transportation.
He has also worked tirelessly, in conjunction
with a coalition of LGBT advocates, to ensure that Cook County does
not do business with groups that discriminate based on sexual orientation.
- Protected HIV/AIDS funding: Mike Quigley
worked with the County to streamline and expedite the grant disbursement
system to help several community-based HIV/AIDS service providers
receive grant funding more quickly and efficiently.
- A Leader on Women's Issues: Mike Quigley
was the leading advocate on the Cook County Board for a new Domestic
Violence Courthouse that would be safe for women and their children.
His efforts led to the construction of the new Cook County Domestic
Violence Courthouse, which has been open since 2005.
As a strong supporter of women's reproductive
rights, Mike Quigley has fought for increased access to reproductive
health care for all women throughout the county, regardless of their
means.
He has also secured additional county funding
to provide enhanced medical and legal services for rape victims at
Stroger Hospital.
